Does a Root Canal Hurt?
The thought of getting a root canal can put you on edge, the fact is there is a myth swirling around that root canals cause extreme pain. While painful root canals might have been the case decades ago, with today’s anesthetics and modern technology, most people don’t feel any more discomfort than having a routine cavity filled. In fact, for many people, being in need of a root canal is more painful than the actual procedure itself.
Why Are Root Canals Performed?
A root canal is performed to save a tooth that is infected, inflamed or badly decayed. If the pulp (comprised of soft tissues housing the nerves and blood vessels of your tooth) became damaged, it breaks down and bacteria begin to multiply. The tooth then can become inflamed, decayed or infected, potentially leading to a tooth abscess.
The dentist performs a root canal to remove the damaged pulp, then cleans and seals the tooth. The longer you postpone getting a needed root canal, the more risk your chance to save your tooth.
Signs You Might Need a Root Canal
Only your dentist can tell you definitively if you need a root canal, but several signs might indicate you need the procedure. These include:
- Having tooth sensitivity, especially to touch or hot and cold foods and beverages.
- Severe toothache, which becomes more pronounced when you chew or apply pressure.
- Darkening or discoloration of the affected tooth.
- Tender or swollen gums
Steps Your Trans Dental Dentist Takes to Avoid a Painful Root Canal
Before your root canal, your dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding area to prevent you from experienced pain. If you’re particularly anxious about having a root canal, your dentist might be able to provide you with a calming medicine, such as nitrous oxide.
After your root canal, you may experience mild pain or discomfort for a few days. You can apply an ice pack to soothe any discomfort or take an over-the-counter medication, like ibuprofen, to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain. Your dentist may also recommend you gargling with saltwater.
